NSW: NSW Coalition warns PM against Kurnell airport option
The New South Wales Coalition has urged Prime Minister JOHN HOWARD to scrap the idea
for a second airport in Sydney.
State Deputy Liberal leader BARRY O'FARRELL says any move by the federal government
to build a multi-billion dollar airport on the Kurnell peninsula would be strongly opposed.
He says the Coalition would be supporting local State MP MALCOLM KERR and Federal MP
BRUCE BAIRD in fighting the proposal.
Mr O'FARRELL says the state opposition cannot support a Kurnell option for Sydney airport.
He says the coalition has made its opposition known to Badgery's and has a strong view
that a second Sydney airport should be made outside the Sydney basin.
But Mr HOWARD has refused to rule out reports that the government is considering the
Kurnell peninsula as a site for Sydney's second airport.
A report in today's Daily Telegraph said Cabinet discussed a proposal for a multi-billion
dollar airport on the peninsula, where the Caltex oil refinery is currently situated.
